Choosing the right number of allowances so your state withholding is close to your real tax
In 2020 the IRS redesigned the federal W-4 and removed allowances. Nebraska did not follow.
Instead, it created Form W-4N, the Nebraska Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate. If you only gave your employer a new federal W-4 and never filed a W-4N, Nebraska rules generally require the employer to withhold as if you were single with zero allowances, which often means slightly more state tax comes out than necessary.
Each allowance subtracts a fixed amount from your annualized wages before the Circular EN withholding formula runs. In recent schedules, one allowance is worth roughly $2,400 to $2,500 of annual wages.
At a 3–4% marginal rate, each allowance lowers yearly Nebraska withholding by about $75 to $100.
| Allowances | Annual wages removed | Less withheld per year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | about $2,400–$2,500 | about $75–$100 |
| 2 | about $4,800–$5,000 | about $150–$200 |
| 3 | about $7,200–$7,500 | about $225–$300 |
You can see the exact effect for your pay with the Nebraska income tax withholding calculator; change the allowance count and watch the per-check amount move.
| Situation | Typical allowances |
|---|---|
| Single, one job, no dependents | 1 |
| Married, one earner | 2 + one per dependent |
| Married, both working | Split allowances; often 1 each |
| Two or more jobs | 0 on the second job |
| Want a bigger refund | 0 or extra withholding |
These are starting points. The W-4N worksheet walks through personal, spouse, dependent, and deduction lines to get an exact number.
Line 2 of the W-4N lets you add a flat dollar amount per pay period. This is useful for side income without withholding, such as freelance work, or if you owed Nebraska tax last year.
Even $10 per biweekly check adds $260 a year.
You can claim exempt from Nebraska withholding only if you had no Nebraska tax liability last year and expect none this year. Exempt status must be renewed every year by February 15.
Nonresidents working in Nebraska generally still owe Nebraska tax on Nebraska wages.
After changing your form, check the next pay stub. For how allowances interact with the state brackets, read Nebraska income tax brackets.
It is not mandatory to submit one, but without it your employer withholds as single with zero allowances. Filing one lets you fine-tune Nebraska withholding.
Yes. The W-4N stands on its own.
Your federal W-4 entries do not control Nebraska allowances.
Add allowances on your W-4N, then check the next stub. Each extra allowance reduces annual withholding by roughly $75 to $100 at current rates.
The Nebraska Department of Revenue publishes the current W-4N. Give the signed form to your employer, not to the state.
